Gabriel Nacato Obituary, NEW YORK, N.Y. — A 17-year-old Brooklyn teenager, identified as Gabriel Nacato, was killed Wednesday morning after an electric bicycle he was riding collided with an SUV near New York City Hall in Lower Manhattan, according to the New York Police Department.
Police said the fatal crash happened shortly before 9 a.m. near the intersection of Centre Street and Chambers Street, an area located close to City Hall, the Brooklyn Bridge, and NYPD headquarters. The incident remains under investigation by the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad.
According to investigators, Gabriel Nacato, of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, was traveling northbound on Centre Street on an electric bicycle when he left the protected bike lane and entered the roadway. Police said the e-bike then collided with a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV that was traveling in the same direction.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene following reports of the crash. Despite efforts to provide assistance, Nacato was pronounced dead at the location due to injuries sustained in the collision.
Authorities have not released additional details about the specific injuries involved or whether the teenager was wearing protective equipment at the time of the crash. Officials have also not announced any contributing factors, including whether speed, impairment, or other circumstances played a role.
The SUV was being driven by a 40-year-old woman, according to police. Investigators said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. No criminal charges have been filed as of Wednesday, and officials have not indicated whether any citations are expected.
